Hanna Johansen was born in Bremen in 1939 and grew up in the war and postwar years. She studied in Marburg and Göttingen, but never completed a degree. She spent two years in the USA, and has lived in Zurich since 1972. After a number of translations, she published her own first book with the Carl Hanser Verlag in 1978, and in 1983 her first children’s book, Bruder Bär und Schwester Bär (Two Little Bears). She has since published many other books with Nagel & Kimche and Hanser; they have been translated into many languages and been awarded various literary prizes.
